After the homebuyer walkthrough, the homebuilder should keep the electrical and water utility services on in the builder’s name for a few more weeks.

This practice allows the builder’s customer service crew to make any repairs that surfaced on the walkthrough before the new homebuyers actually move-in.

Few things are more frustrating from a construction standpoint…than to schedule certain subcontractors in a particular house or condominium to repair walkthrough remaining items…only to discover that the utilities have been turned off because the unit has been turned over to the new homebuyers…who have not yet coordinated with the utility companies to transfer the electrical, water, and gas into their names.

The benefit of getting these last remaining repair items fixed before the homebuyers physically move-in…far outweighs the small cost of continuing the utilities for a few weeks after the walkthrough.
